the first proclaimed by Pope Boniface VII in 1300 to the XVIII Holy Year of
the Great Jubilee Proclaimed by John Paul II in 2000. |

"Boniface VIII established the recurrence of the Jubilee which would give devout Christians a specific amount of time in which to fully examine their conscience and soul; before this time, other Popes had attempted to establish specific periods for the forgiveness of sins but the periods and the conditions governing them were always different. The Jubliean period of forgiveness was deeply felt by the faithful and as a result, the successive Popes decided to repeat the plenary indulgence, granted by Boniface VIII, at regular intervals. The Jubilee, called Holy Year since 1500, is a time for total forgiveness and the granting of plenary remission of all sins." The Popes, Memmo Caporilli Since 1300,
Popes have proclaimed Jubilee or Holy Years, generally every 25 years.
Four additional jubilees were declared at 33 year intervals; 1390, 1423, 1933
and 1983. To achieve forgiveness one visits the four main
